Ida County Attorney

The County Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer of the county. In our criminal justice system, the decision whether to prosecute, and if so on what charges, is a matter ordinarily within the discretion of the duly elected prosecutor.
The attorneys and staff in the Ida County Attorney’s Office work hard to achieve justice for the victims of crime and to serve the community and residents in Ida County, by prosecuting violations of state law and providing legal counsel to the county government.
The responsibilities of the County Attorney are prosecuting violations of the laws of the State of Iowa, and of County Ordinances.
The County Attorney DOES:

  • Prosecute all violations of state criminal laws and county ordinances.
  • Provide legal advice to the Board of Supervisors and county and township officers concerning county matters.
  • Represent and defend the state, county and its officers in officially related cases.
  • Recover all monies (debts, fines, penalties, etc.) owing to the state or county.
  • Present all mental health commitment proceedings and all juvenile delinquency and child in need of assistance cases.
  • There are both full-time and part-time County Attorneys in Iowa. Roughly two-thirds of all County Attorneys are part-time and may handle private legal work in addition to their official duties.
